The mesopelagic ecosystem will equip at depths of between 200 and 1000 meters, and the amount of mesopelagic fish species in this zone is estimated to be in the order of billions of tonnes. Number of species is unknown, but it’s estimated to be over 200 different species. Some of the well known mesopelagic species are Krill, Laksesild and Lanthernfish. Mesopelagic species are relevant as feed for the aquaculture industry and within the health and nutrition industries.
SINTEF Oceans main focus in “industrial mesopelagic initiative” is industrial development. This effort is financed by industry through fishing boat companies great dedication, with part financing from Innovation Norway, The Directorate of Fisheries, the Research Council of Norway and the Fisheries and Aquaculture Industry Research Fund (FHF).
