In an innovative crossover between art and science, artists Entangled Others and Daphne Xanthopoulou, together with oceanographer Joan Llort, have presented “SonarMies: Liquid Strata”. This installation creatively and experimentally transforms scientific data, transporting visitors to the deep sea where the sonic and visual heartbeat of the unknown mesopelagic ecosystem resonates.
A Glimpse into the Twilight Zone
“Liquid Strata uses innovative scientific data to reveal the dynamics and hidden layers of the mesopelagic zone, also known as the twilight zone. This oceanic layer is found at depths where light is scarce, between 200 and 1,000 metres, harbouring a forgotten but vital world of marine biodiversity.
A Success at the Sónar Festival
The work was presented during the prestigious Sónar music festival in Barcelona, which this year attracted more than 150,000 attendees. As part of Sónar+D, a section dedicated to science, innovation and creative industries, the installation was located in the iconic Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, providing a unique setting for this fusion of art and science.

Understanding the Unexplored
To deepen the understanding of the mesopelagic zone, a video from the SUMMER project was included alongside the artistic installation, featuring characteristic sounds of this enigmatic ocean layer.

We are delighted to have collaborated on this fascinating initiative and would like to express our gratitude to the artists Entangled Others and Daphne Xanthopoulou, as well as oceanographer Joan Llort, for their dedication and effort in bringing the mesopelagic ecosystem to the public in such a special way.
